Canadian Red Cross assisting tenants after Saint John fire
The Canadian Red Cross says at least 6 people were temporarily displaced after a fire in a three-storey apartment building in Saint John.
In a press release, the aid agency says disaster volunteers are assisting four of those displaced by the fire on Friday afternoon.
The Saint John Fire Department says the blaze began in the furnace room of the building and heavily damaged one of the five apartments in the older wood-frame building.
Fire department officials added another unit had smoke damage; meanwhile the power to the entire building was temporarily turned off.
Red Cross volunteers arranged emergency lodging and meals for a man from one unit, as well as food purchases for a man from a second apartment and for a woman her daughter from a third.
The aid agency says aside from a temporary power disconnection, the tenants of two apartments at the back of the building were not affected.
The fire was reported around 4:45 p.m and there were no injuries.
