Canadian Red Cross closes temporary shelter in Miramichi

(Submitted/Canadian Red Cross)

The Canadian Red Cross says it has closed a temporary shelter for tenants ordered out of a Miramichi apartment and hostel building after it was declared unsafe by the Fire Marshal.

The Red Cross says approximately a dozen tenants had been making regular use of the shelter for sleeping, meals, and washrooms  but that has been reduced to just three.

It says most tenants have since found other accommodations while some have pitched tents near the building, hoping renovations are soon completed and the Fire Marshal's non-occupancy order lifted so they can move back in.

The shelter was first set up June 19th and was operating until Monday.

Those still requiring support can contact the Miramichi branch of the Salvation Army.
