Changes needed to see more female representation at NB Legislature, political analyst says
There's a new group in New Brunswick aiming to get more women involved in provincial politics, but a political analyst at UNB says it likely won't achieve its goal of 50 per cent female representation by 2018 unless some major changes are made.
UNB's Joanna Everitt tells CBC that some of those changes could include a change to proportional representation and nominating women in, what she calls, winnable ridings.
She says there have been recent increases in female nominees in New Brunswick, however it has typically been in "swing" or "lost" ridings.
But Everitt says she's pleased the "Women for 50%" group is fighting for gender parity and that the strength of its membership speaks volumes to its potential to succeed where other groups have not.
