Citizens call on Bathurst council to allow chickens within city limits
A group of citizens is calling on Bathurst council to allow chickens within the city limits.
The group is recommending that a maximum of six hens be allowed and that the city implement a permitting system and bylaw to regulate the proposed home-based operations.
Audrey Demers says such a move could help reduce waste and improve food security while Marc Armstrong argues it would encourage families to spend time outdoors, encourage the transfer of knowledge between generations, and give the city control over existing broods.
Councillor Samuel Daigle says a well planned and well regulated system could work while mayor Paolo Fongemie says it could attract young families to the city.
Council is expected to study the matter.
