Coast Guard begins smashing ice off Northeast N.B. coast

The coast guard is breaking up ice off the coast of northeastern New Brunswick in an effort to help protect critically endangered North Atlantic right whales.

The Coast Guard says an icebreaker has already cleared ice from Shippagan harbour on the Acadian Peninsula.

The move aims allow local crab fisherman to wrap up their season in the Gulf of St. Lawrence earlier than usual.

That's expected to help reduce entanglements as well as the number of whales being struck by ships.
