Combing through electoral reform report will take time, Premier says
(CP) - Premier Brian Gallant says his government needs time to examine a report that makes 24 sweeping recommendations on who can vote in New Brunswick -- and what kind of ballots should be cast.
The Commission on Electoral Reform is calling for the voting age to be lowered to 16, giving some non-citizens the vote and implementing a preferential ballot that has voters rank the candidates.
Those choices would come into play if no one is able to get more than half of the vote on the first ballot.
At least one commissioner is calling for a preferential ballot to be implemented for next year's election but Gallant says such a change would need the approval of voters -- either through a referendum or by a party seeking a mandate in an election.
