Company could break ground on proposed Belledune iron plant in fall

Work on a proposed iron-ore facility in Belldedune could get underway as soon as this fall.

But in order for that to happen, Maritime Iron CEO Greg McKenzie tells the Northern Light the company has several items check off its 'to-do list' before it can break ground.

Those items include consulting with communities and First Nations as well as environmental permits.

McKenzie says both Belledune and nearby First Nations communities have been welcoming and that the company aims to partner with CCNB campuses in Bathurst in Campbellton in order to train workers.

The project, if it proceeds, would result in approximately 1,000 jobs during the construction phase and 200 once the plant is operating.
