Grits react sharply to Tory MP's comments on NAFTA talks

The Liberals are reacting sharply to comments from Conservative M-P Erin O'Toole over the ongoing negotiations for the North American Free Trade Agreement.

O'Toole said his party is willing to offer non-partisan support to the Trudeau government during the talks.

But he says that support will only continue if the Liberals keep the focus on job creation, securing market access and levelling a playing field that he says has given Mexican labour an unfair advantage.

O'Toole says the Tories have no time for some other priorities the government has listed, such as the environment and gender.

He says his party will attack the government if it focuses on those kind of issues.

The Liberals did not react kindly to O'Toole's comments, taking to Twitter on Sunday to denounce them.

Environment Minister Catharine McKenna says the government won't allow NAFTA to be a race to the bottom.

Unifor President Jerry Dias also chimed in, calling O'Toole a ``tool'' for being dismissive of environmental standards.
