Local snow crab season off to a slow start

The snow crab season is underway on the Acadian Peninsula but fishermen say, so far, their first haul is less than encouraging.

Harvesters set out on Sunday and returned with their first catch Tuesday.

Though it's still too early to say how prosperous the season will be, Jean-Bernard Savoie, captain of the Cindy Maxime, says so far it's been quiet and not as strong as last year.

Meanwhile, measures enacted by the federal government to protect critically endangered North Atlantic right whales have caused some fishermen to set their traps in an area off the Iles-de-la-Madeleine, a nearly 14 hour journey from their home wharf.
