N.B. Environment Minister says federally imposed carbon tax like a very bad April Fool's joke

New Brunswick Environment Minister Jeff Carr says the federal carbon tax imposed on the province is like a very bad April Fool's joke.

But Carr says unfortunately drivers are being hit with the highest carbon gas tax in Atlantic Canada, which will drive up gas prices by about five cents a litre with the HST.

Ottawa has imposed the tax on provinces that failed to bring in their own carbon pricing plan but New Brunswick says it can fight climate change without raising taxes and is an intervener in a constitutional challenge of the tax launched by Saskatchewan and Ontario.

The Canadian Fuels Association says rising gas prices in New Brunswick could potentially drive consumers over nearby provincial borders for cheaper fuel.
