NB proposes to exempt amateur athletes from minimum wage legislation
The New Brunswick government wants to change the Employment Standards Act to exempt amateur athletes from minimum wage and other provisions.
Labour Minister Donald Arseneault say the change will help ensure the longevity of amateur sports teams and organizations and mirrors similar provisions in other provinces.
In addition to removing minimum wage requirements, amateur athletes would also be exempt from provisions governing vacations, hours of work and termination of employment when they are engaged in athletic endeavours.
The changes would affect New Brunswick's three Quebec Major Junior Hockey teams including the Acadie-Bathurst Titan.
