Noxious odour forces evacuation from Edmundston apartment building

The Red Cross says tenants of Edmundston apartment building were ordered to evacuate their homes following the discovery of a health hazard.

Fire crews were called to the four-unit building Tuesday afternoon over concerns about an increasingly noxious odour, but quickly discovered a former tenant left behind food that had spoiled, animal waste, along with smelly garbage.

A public health inspector ordered four tenants to temporarily vacate three apartments for three days will the owners arranged to have the vacant unit emptied and cleaned.

Red Cross volunteers have arranged emergency lodging and meals for a one couple, while the other tenants have made arrangements to stay with relatives.
