Officials investigating alleged oil spill in Bay of Chaleur

Officials are investigating what appears to be an oil spill in the Bay of Chaleur near Belledune.

On social media, witnesses report the slick is approximately 5km in length.

Belledune Port Authority president and CEO Denis Caron says he was alerted to the situation by lobster fishermen this week and that it has bee reported to authorities.

Caron says he doesn't believe it originates from any of the ports vessels, as all boats passing through are inspected on a regular basis.

He says currents in the bay make it difficult to locate the alleged spill.

Caron says the situation is being taken very seriously and that an investigation is underway.
