Ontario man fined after illegal cigarettes seized near Oromocto

The RCMP say a 54-year-old man from Maitland, Ontario will have to pay more than $150,000 in fines after being found in possession of more than 100,000 illegal cigarettes.

Kenneth Gerard Carew was arrested May 10th when a vehicle was pulled over during a traffic stop on the Trans-Canada Highway near Oromocto.

The cigarettes were seized from a utility trailer the man was hauling.

Police say Carew appeared in Burton Provincial Court on December 17th and was fined after being found guilty of the offences under the Tobacco Tax Act and the Excise Act.
