Parishioners outraged after Bathurst priest removed from duties
Parishioners of Holy Family Church in Bathurst are outraged that their beloved priest has been removed from the pulpit.
Father Maurice Frenette, a member of the College of Consultors of the Diocese of Bathurst tells the Acadie-Nouvelle that Father David Ferguson was removed from his position at Holy Family Church a few weeks ago as a result of on-going health issues and exhaustion.
Frenette adds Ferguson was unable to say mass in the Restigouche area as dictated by his schedule on a number of occasions.
However church choir director Nicole Pitre, says Ferguson suffers from only seasonal allergies, but agrees the priest must be exhauste, noting he has presided over approximately 120 funerals, ten weddings, 57 baptisms, and made between 15 and 20 hospital visits this past year alone.
Pitre alleges that Ferguson was made to leave the area and that the church community questions the removal of a priest she calls 'extraordinary'.
Parishioners as far away as the Acadian Peninsula have been expressing outrage as well.
On Monday, November 6th, a Facebook page was launched in an effort have Ferguson reinstated.
