Petition demanding trial for two Bathurst police officers has no bearing on decision

New Brunswick's Public Prosecutions Services says a petition calling on the Attorney General to order a trial for two Bathurst police officers involved in the death of Michel Vienneau of Tracadie two years ago has no bearing on such decision.

Assistant attorney general Luc Labonte says decisions are made based on law and evidence, not public opinion but adds he will be reviewing the case to see what the next step will be.

Friends of Vienneau launched the petition over the weekend after a judge ruled that there was not enough evidence to order Constables Mathieu Boudreau and Patrick Bulger to trial.

It has since garnered hundreds of signatures.
