Port of Belledune marks 50 years in 2018

Belledune is in celebration mode this afternoon as one of its economic contributors marks a major milestone.

2018 sees the Port of Belledune mark its 50th anniversary.

Mayor Joe Noel says the port is an integral part of the village and continues to significantly grow year after year.

Noel says the port has been an excellent corporate citizens, sponsoring many events, activities, and initiatives both in Belledune and around the Chaleur region.

Over the past several years, Port President & CEO Denis Caron says, the Port of Belledune has been able to diversify its operations, resulting in an increase to handled commodities.

He says growth figures appear to be 'very strong again this year' and that the port aims to continue diversifying by attracting more products and working closely with its partners.

While 50 years of the port's history are being celebrated, Caron says additional activities related to growth are planned in 2018 and that it will continue to reinvest into the community.

Caron says the port is eager to continue investing back into the community.

Each year the port invests five per cent of its net earnings into various initiatives in northern New Brunswick with approximately $130,000 being invested last year alone.

Caron says the port aims to familiarize the region with its operations and has even purchased a 15 passenger van to give tours of the facility.

Festivities kicked off Thursday afternoon at the Belledune Recreation & Cultural Centre.
