Province attempts to entice political parties to recruit more women
(CP) - New Brunswick has announced changes that will provide an incentive for political parties to recruit more female candidates.
Premier Brian Gallant says his government plans to amend the public financing formula for political parties so votes received by female candidates are weighted one and a-half times greater than votes received by male candidates.
This move is part of broader reforms expected this week to the province's electoral system.
Gallant says a lot still needs to be done to get more women in positions of influence, but calls the change a good start to having more women sitting in the legislature.
