QMJHL commissioner: No plans to change league's name

The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League says it has no current plans to change its name to include the Maritimes.

QMJHL commissioner Gilles Courteau tells the Telegraph-Journal a name change is not something the league has been talking about.

Courteau says changing the name has been brought up at past meetings and could come up again in the future.

The idea was brought up last year by New Brunswick Premier Brian Gallant who called for a name that would be more inclusive of teams in New Brunswick Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island in addition to Quebec.

The Q-League is focusing on a potential new plan that would see it, along with the Western Hockey League and Ontario Hockey League, combine under the Canadian Hockey League banner with one president.

Courteau says the CHL has just adopted a new constitution, which will they will be dealing with before looking at making any other changes, including a name change.
