Quebec forest fires prompt 'special air quality statement' for Chaleur region

New Brnswick's Department of Energy and Resource Development says a smoky haze observed in the Chaleur region on Monday stems from forest fires in Quebec.

A 'special air quality statement' has been issued for the region as a result.

Environment Canada says smoke from the fires has resulted in deteriorated air quality and that the smoke will gradually move south later on Tuesday.

The Bathurst Police Force meanwhile, is reminding people the province's Fire Index lists recreational fires as banned across the province.

The department says provincial Fire Watch directions also apply to backyard fireplaces and public campsites.
