Quebec teacher wins million-dollar teaching prize
(CP) - A Canadian high-school teacher whose teaching philosophy underscores acts of kindness in Quebec's isolated north has won a million-dollar prize for teaching excellence.
Maggie MacDonnell was awarded the annual Global Teacher Prize during a Sunday ceremony in Dubai, beating out thousands of applicants from around the world.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau offered his congratulations in a video message broadcast at the event.
The Nova Scotia-born teacher has been teaching in Salluit in northern Quebec since 2010.
She says she'll use the million bucks to start an environmental stewardship program for northern youth.
