Recent Supreme Court ruling may have playe a role in Wilbur Dedam's release, lawyer says

The lawyer for a former Esgenoopetit First Nation chief convicted of a number of sexual assault charges believes a recent Supreme Court ruling played a role in a decision to release his client from custody this week.

The Supreme Court ruled that Dennis Oland was wrongfully denied bail as he appealed his second-degree murder conviction in the death of his father, Saint John businessman Richard Oland.

64 year  old Wilbur Dedam was sentenced to nine years behind bars but was released on Tuesday, April 11th as his lawyer, TJ Burke, appeals his conviction.

Burke argued that Dedam was not a threat to the public.

Dedam's appeal hearing is scheduled for October.
