Remnants of Bas-Caraquet church destroyed by fire to be demolished

The charred remnants of a century-old Bas-Caraquet church destroyed by fire in June will be demolished by winter.

Bishop Daniel Jodoin broke the news to parishioners of St. Paul de Bas-Caraquet on Sunday.

Parish Management Committee's Mirila Boucher says an engineer's report suggests what remains of the structure is to far gone to save.

The parish's insurance provided will pick up the $2 million tab for the demolition and pay $2.5 million to the parish council to build a new place of worship.
