Research firm reports crab prices at a record high
The price of crab coming from the Gulf of St. Lawrence is at a record high.
Figures from Urner Barr, a food market research firm, peg the price for the crustaceans at $8.75 to $8.90 a pound for 5 to 8 oz crab.
That's up from the $7.40 a pound this time last year, and $5.00 a pound in 2015.
Fishermen are typically paid less.
Large crabs are selling for between $9.30 and $9.45 a pound.
The firm says the price for larger crabs is down due to possible zone closures in the gulf.
