'Serious glitches' in new national public alert system

Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale said he expects federal, provincial and private sector experts behind the new national public alert system to quickly correct ``serious glitches'' that caused problems in testing.

A space in the coding prevented the alert from being sent to Quebec wireless devices yesterday morning, while some, but not all devices in Ontario received it later in the afternoon.

Pelmorex, which operates the system, says all Alert Ready partners are working together to investigate the test alert results.

The tests were being conducted after the CRTC ordered wireless providers to implement the system to distribute warnings of imminent safety threats, such as tornadoes, floods, Amber Alerts or terrorist threats.

Further tests are scheduled for the rest of Canada for Wednesday.
