Shippagan business lays off 50 employees
A Shippagan peat moss company that received nearly $5 million in provincial and federal funding last year has laid off approximately 50 of its employees.
Jiffy Products Vice President Zoel Gautreau says the company lost a major contract and that the decision to lay off workers was necessary to ensure the viability of the business.
Gautreau says the unspecified product was exclusive to one customer and that efforts will be made to see if it can be marketed to others.
The government funding Jiffy Products received was to help move operations from Shippagan to Pokemouche.
The plan will proceed and is expected to take place by 2018.
