Unionized workers at Brunswick Smelter in Belledune set to begin strike
Unionized workers at the Brunswick Smelter in Belledune will take to the picket line this week.
In two separate ballots, the workers voted overwhelmingly in favour of job action over concerns surrounding pensions, benefits, safety representation, and the union's ability to represent them.
United Steelworkers Union Local 7085's Bart Dempsey says the strike is set to begin on Wednesday at 6pm and that the union has offered to return to the negotiating table on the condition Glencore remove what the union's calling 'their needless concessions'.
The workers have been without a contract since the end of February and the union has been trying to negotiate a new deal for months.
The union represents 280 of the smelter's workers.
Workers say they arrived at the Smelter on Wednesday morning, only to have Glencore turn them around at the gates.
We've reached out to the union for comment.
