Urban beekeeping explodes in Quebec

A report says there's been an explosion of interest in urban beekeeping in a number of Quebec cities in recent years.

The website Urban Agriculture MTL says there were 600 beehives in the Montreal metropolitan region in 2017.

That compares to fewer than 25 in 2001.

The website says the city of Gatineau in western Quebec now permits what's known as ``urban apiculture'' and a number of municipalities are working to respond to a demand by their residents.

In response to the growing demand, the Quebec Reference Centre for Agriculture and Agrifoods (CRAAQ) has also published a free 35-page introductory guide in French.

It provides would-be beekeepers with information to help them manage their hives.
