Vehicle-pedestrian collisions at St. Anne Street crosswalk puzzles police

The Bathurst Police Force is puzzled as to why a Saint Anne Street crosswalk is such a hotspot for vehicle/pedestrian collisions.

Cst. Jeff Chiasson tells the Northern Light that it's a normal crosswalk with overhead lights along with several nearby light poles and that he suspects the collisions are mostly due to driver inattention.

A 76 year old Beresford man died in hospital last year after being struck while using that crosswalk and, most recently, a 19 year old man received life-threatening injuries after being hit there last week.

Other than regular patrols and educating people about crosswalks, Chiasson says there's not much more the force can do.

The City of Bathurst says it can't comment on the matter as there is an active police investigation.
