'Walking Alongside our Sisters Memorial Walk' in Bathurst highlights Canada-wide crisis

Dozens of people took part in a walk in Bathurst Thursday aimed at drawing attention to the thousands of Aboriginal women and girls.

Off-Reserve Aboriginal Outreach Officer Savannah Simmons hopes the 'Walking Alongside our Sisters Memorial Walk' will raise awareness about the crisis Canada is facing when it comes to Aboriginal women who, she says, face high rates of being targeted by violence, going missing or being murdered.

Participants marched through downtown Bathurst which was lined with several red dresses, which Simmons says represents the women and girls who have gone missing from their communities.

Simmons says it's time to openly talk about the issue and for all Canadians to show that Aboriginal woman and girls matter.
