Alessia Cara, Jessie Reyez Among Juno Award Nominees
Grammy winner Alessia Cara is among the nominees announced Tuesday for this year's Juno Awards.
The 21-year-old from Brampton, Ont. is up for Single of the Year (for "How Far I'll Go" ) and Fan Choice.
Cara is the only female nominee in the Single of the Year category. She's up against Arcade Fire ("Everything Now"), Arkells ("Knocking at the Door"), Shawn Mendes ("There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back") and The Weeknd ft. Daft Punk ("I Feel It Coming").
Cara had eight previous Juno nominations. Last year, she took home Pop Album of the Year (Know-It-All) and in 2016 she was named Breakthrough Artist of the Year.
Last month, Cara went into the Grammy Awards with four nominations – and picked up Best New Artist.
It's a big year for Reyez, who also earned nominations in categories like Breakthrough Artist and Best R&B/Soul Recording (Kiddo).
The late Gord Downie was honoured with several nominations, including Adult Alternative Album of the Year and Songwriter of the Year. Downie is also up for Artist of the Year against Daniel Caesar (whose Freudian is up for R&B/Soul Recording), Lights, Ruth B and Shania Twain.
These are the first Juno nominations for Caesar, the 22-year-old Ontario native who had two Grammy nominations this year.
Album of the Year nominees are Arcade Fire, Johnny Reid, Michael Bublé, Ruth B and Shania Twain and vying for Pop Album of the Year are Hedley, Lights, Ria Mae, Ruth B and Scott Helman.
The nominees for International Album of the Year are Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeran, Kendrick Lamar, Post Malone and Taylor Swift.
Virginia to Vegas is among the Breakthrough Artist of the Year nominees.
Noticably absent from the Rap Recording of the Year nominees is Drake. The category is filled with Belly, Clairmont The Second, Lou Phelps, Maestro Fresh Wes and Tory Lanez.
Drake, whose new track “God’s Plan” is currently No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, has had 31 Juno nominations since 2010 but has collected only six. Last year he scored five nods but came up empty.
Alvvays, A Tribe Called Red, Arcade Fire, Hedley, and Broken Social Scene are competing for Group of the Year.
The Juno Awards, hosted by Michael Bublé, will be handed out March 24 and 25 in Vancouver. Performers for the televised show on March 25 include Hedley, Jessie Reyez, and Daniel Caesar.
