Arkells Among Canadian Acts At Coachella

Canada was represented on the first weekend of the Coachella music festival in California by rockers Arkells, R&B duo Majid Jordan, electronic music group Crystal Castles, hip hop artist Nav, and rapper Tory Lanez.

What's more, Drake and The Weeknd made surprise appearances on different stages.

Arkells, based in Hamilton, Ont., summed up their experience with four words in a tweet: “Was all a dream.”

The band’s set was also a dream for Canadian fan Ross Watt, who was invited on stage by Arkells singer Max Kerman. After getting some pointers from guitarist Mike DeAngelis, the 26-year-old from Collingwood, Ont. made his Coachella debut.

“To be honest, I was a little drunk so that helped with my courage,” Watt told The Desert Sun. “I’ve played in front of a crowd before, been in a couple crappy bands, but nothing like this size.

“But it was easy chords and easy rhythms and I knew the song and it was all good. A non-issue.”

Following their Coachella set on Saturday, Majid Jordan tweeted: “What a beautiful crowd tonight. This is why we both do this. So wonderful to meet you all. Until next time!!!”

Toronto rapper Tory Lanez performed in the Sahara tent – only days after he was arrested in Florida.

He told the crowd not to expect any surprise guests on stage.

“I wanted my first time at Coachella to be about me and you,” he said at the beginning of his set.
