Drake took to social media over the Canada Day long weekend to pay tribute to a fellow Toronto rapper who was shot dead on Saturday evening.
“I wish peace would wash over our city," Drake wrote in Instagram story. “So much talent and so many stories we never got to see play out.”
Jahvante Smart, 21, and Ernest Modekwe, 28, were gunned down on Toronto’s busy Queen Street.
Smart, a father of a one-year-old daughter, was a rapper known as Smoke Dawg and toured with Drake in Europe last year.
"As a young man from Regent Park, he overcame poverty and grew into a responsible caring grown man who took care of his friends and family," read a statement from Smart's family. "He helped people wherever he could and will be remembered for his huge smile and glowing personality."
Modekwe was a brand manager for hip-hop collective Prime.
Police have not confirmed that the two victims were targeted but rumours are swirling they were murdered as retaliation for Smart appearing in a music video that was filmed in a rival gang’s housing project.
According to reports, witnesses told police they saw a black SUV with tinted windows and a white Bentley speeding away after the shooting.
