Canada’s Drake and Daniel Caesar were among the winners Sunday night at the 61st Grammy Awards.
“God’s Plan” earned Rap Song of the Year honours for Drake and fellow Canadians Matthew Samuels (aka Boi-1da) and Noah Shebib – two of the track’s co-writers.
“We play in an opinion-based sport, not a factual-based sport,” said Drake. “You’ve already won if you have people who are singing your songs word for word, if you’re a hero in your hometown.
"Look, if there’s people who have regular jobs who are coming out in the rain and snow, spending money to buy tickets to your shows, you don’t need this right here. You already won.”
His speech was cut short on the live broadcast.
“God’s Plan” lost Song of the Year to Childish Gambino’s “This Is America” and Drake’s “Nice for What” lost to both “King’s Dead” by Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock, Future and James Blake and “Bubblin’” by Anderson.Paak.
Drake's Scorpion was beaten by Kacey Musgraves' Golden Hour for Album of the Year.
Daniel Caesar won his first Grammy for Best R&B Performance as the featured artist on the H.E.R. song “Best Part.”
Shawn Mendes, who was nominated for the first time, went home empty-handed. His hit “In My Blood” lost Song of the Year and his self-titled album lost Pop Vocal Album to Ariana Grande (for Sweetener).
Mendes, exercising his right to bare arms, performed his nominated song at the piano before picking up the guitar and being joined on stage by Miley Cyrus.

Lady Gaga accepted the Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for her duet with A Star Is Born co-star Bradley Cooper, “Shallow.” It also won Best Song Written For Visual Media.
“I’m so proud to be a part of a movie that addresses mental health issues,” said Gaga, who also won Best Pop Solo Performance for “Joanne (Where Do You Think You’re Goin’?)”
“They’re so important. A lot of artists deal with that and we need to take care of each other.”
Dua Lipa was named Best New Artist and received the award from last year's winner, Canadian singer Alessia Cara. Cardi B's Invasion of Privacy won for Rap Album of the Year.
It was also a good night for Kacey Musgraves, whose Golden Hour won Album of the Year and Best Country Album and earned Grammys for “Space Cowboy” (Best Country Song) and “Butterflies” (Best Country Solo Performance).
