Howie Day was arrested Friday on suspicion of assaulting an ex-girlfriend during an argument.
The 38-year-old “Collide” singer is accused of grabbing the woman, throwing her to the ground and wrapping his hands around her throat in a New York City hotel room.
He has been charged with third-degree assault, criminal possession of a controlled substance, harassment, and criminal obstruction of breathing.
Prosecutors allege Day told police he was “going through Xanax withdrawal.”
He was released on $500 U.S. bail and is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
Last year, Day was arrested at the Seattle airport for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend.
In 2005, Day was charged with interfering with a flight crew after he became unruly on a flight from Dallas to Boston. He was sentenced to one year of probation and was ordered to attend counselling.
A year earlier, Day was arrested in Wisconsin while on tour with Canada’s Barenaked Ladies after he allegedly locked a woman in the bathroom of his tour bus after she refused sex and broke the cell phone of another woman who was trying to call police. He later received a fine.
