Breakthrough country artist Jimmie Allen says songwriting has been a form of therapy.
"The passion of songwriting started with frustration," explained Allen, who had a serious stutter as a child.
He told iHeartRadio that it took him quite some time to get words out, so he would just write down how he felt. Allen recalled a time in second grade when he was trying to express his feelings to a teacher and she said, "don't worry about it, just write it down.”
Through the years he would write down how he was feeling, and it became his therapy.
"The more I was listening to songs, I started saying 'wow, these are just people expressing how they're feeling,'" he explained.
Allen moved to Nashville, home of some of the best songwriters around. "I was able to learn from these amazing songwriters how to craft a song but still remember Jimmie from second grade who used to just throw everything on a paper – and then kind of put it together."
