Macklemore says he will perform his equality anthem “Same Love” at an Australian rugby championship this week end despite protests.
Australia is currently embroiled in a debate over legalizing same-sex marriage.
“I’m getting a lot of tweets from angry, old white dudes,” Macklemore told L.A. radio station KPWR.
“I think there was a petition today to ban me from playing. I’m gonna go harder.”
Macklemore is headlining the pre-game show at Sunday’s National Rugby League Grand Final in Sydney. There will be 85,000 fans in the stadium and millions watching on TV.
But, opponents of equal marriage rights have criticized the league for politicizing the event.
Former prime minister Tony Abbott, tweeted on Wednesday that rugby fans “shouldn't be subjected to a politicized grand final. Sport is sport.”
Macklemore recorded the 2012 single with Ryan Lewis and Mary Lambert.
