The Ottawa punk band that made headlines around the world after a vinyl pressing plant accidentally put its music on copies of Beyoncé’s Lemonade album has been dumped by its record label.
Late Tuesday, Magic Bullet Records announced that Zex has been dropped amidst allegations of “ongoing and recent accounts of sexual assault” by guitarist Jo Capitalicide. It said there have been “routine boycotts” by music venues and retailers.
The company said it will make donations to two organizations that support abused women in Ottawa and offered to issue refunds to anyone who purchased Zex albums.
"We have always subscribed to the punk notion of 'looking out for one another.' Our hearts and support go out to survivors worldwide," it said.
Capitalicide told CBC News the allegations are “completely untrue and hurtful.”
Certain copies of the yellow vinyl version of Lemonade contain songs from Zex’s latest, Uphill Battle. Columbia Records cited “human error” at a German factory and promised refunds and replacements to customers.
Asked about the mix-up, Capitalicide told the Ottawa Citizen: “It’s good to have laughter in life.”
