"Friday" brainchild Rebecca Black teamed up with YouTube sensation Kurt Hugo Schneider and Alex Goot to reimagine Katy Perry's '80s-inspired single "Chained to the Rhythm" into a soulful duet.
The cover, driven by Black and Goot's vocals, replaces the Max Martin-produced beats with Goot's piano arrangements and drum snares emitting from Schneider's synthesizer.
The original "Chained to the Rhythm," a cowrite with Sia and Martin, features reggae bars from Bob Marley's grandson Skip Marley. Behind the song’s veneer of bouncy beats, the lyrics are laced with ideas of being fixed to a sheltered mindset and an unbreakable routine.
Perry is expected to perform the single at the 2017 iHeartRadio Music Awards on March 5. Watch the cover below:
