Romanian-Canadian Singer Anca Pop Dies At 34
Anca Pop, a Romanian singer who spent part of her childhood in Canada, was found dead Monday. She was 34.
Police divers discovered Pop inside a car in the Danube River in the village of Sviniţa, Romania. She had been reported missing Sunday by her sister.
According to local media reports, authorities are investigating the circumstances of her death.
Pop was born in Romania but emigrated with her family to Ontario, where she took an interest in music and learned to play several instruments. She eventually returned to Romania with her family but came back to Canada on her own.
According to reports, her songwriting got a stamp of approval from Jonathan Simkin of Vancouver’s 604 Records.
Back in Romania, Pop began releasing music in 2012, including the singles “Jealous Monster” and “Free Love” and “Super Cool.” She also collaborated with Bosnian record artist Goran Bregović on his album Champagne for Gypsies.
The Associated Press reported that she made headlines in conservative Romania this year when she revealed she was in a relationship with a woman.
