Selena Gomez had a life-threatening complication following her kidney transplant last summer.
The pop star’s best friend – and kidney donor – Francia Raisa has revealed things didn’t go smoothly.
“My kidney was very active, and when she turned, she broke an artery,” Raisa told W Magazine. “They had to take her into emergency surgery and get a vein from her leg and build a new artery to keep my kidney in place.
“She could have died.”
In an interview with Today last October, Gomez said her new kidney had “flipped” inside her. She recalled: “It was a six-hour surgery that they had to do on me, and the normal kidney process is actually two hours.
“I’m very grateful that there are people who know what to do in that situation.”.
Gomez announced in September 2017 that she had undergone the transplant in the summer as part of her treatment for lupus.
Raisa told W Magazine they both “went through depression” following the procedure.
