Shawn Mendes was begging for mercy last week when one of Drake’s bodyguards started holding him back at a concert in Toronto.
The 19-year-old singer said Wednesday he learned the hard way that not everyone knows who he is.
“It was terrifying,” Mendes recalled during an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
Mendes – who said he met Drake at least twice – was watching The Weeknd perform at the Air Canada Centre on Sept. 9 when he spotted the rap superstar.
“We're up on this riser and Drake's also there watching the show along with another few artists,” Mendes said. “I go over, like, 'I'm going to go say hi, he must remember me.'
"So I go over and I go to touch his side. Next thing I know I'm in the middle of The Weeknd show with my arm hooked behind my back. Drake's security guard has me completely at his mercy.”
Mendes said he hoped Drake remembered him.
“I see Drake look over… in my eyes I knew it was like, 'Help me, please Drake.'
"In that moment, if he didn't remember who I was it would've been the most embarrassing, I don't know what I would've done.”
Luckily, Drake vouched for Mendes. "He comes over and grabs the guy, and goes 'Don't do that. You don't know who that is.'"
Mendes said he was terrified. "For the security guard's sake, he was doing his job, but still it was terrifying,” he said. “Don't expect everybody to know who you are.”
