Tina Turner says she has forgiven her late ex-husband Ike Turner for the years of abuse he put her through.
“I have forgiven him,” Turner told The Times. “It’s all gone, all forgotten.”
The 78-year-old singer said she once refused a request from Ike to do one more tour together because he “wasn’t someone you could forgive and allow him back in.”
Turner said Ike – who had several affairs – was violent towards her because he feared she was going to leave him.
“The other women, because I didn’t love him that way… the other women weren’t so bad, but it was the constant, constant ill-treatment,” she reflected.
Tina and Ike split up in 1976 after 14 years of marriage and were officially divorced in 1978. He died in 2007.
Their abusive relationship was chronicled in the 1993 film What’s Love Got to Do With It? starring Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne.
Turner and her husband Erwin Bach are living in Switzerland. A new musical about Turner’s life opened tonight in London.
