Laverne Cox, best known for playing Sophia on Orange is the New Black, debuted her first ever single on Friday – a dance track titled “Beat For The Gods.”
The song is accompanied by a video in which the 45-year-old actress takes on a number of different roles.
Cox insists this is not the beginning of a second career as a pop star.
“People have been asking me to do music for years, and I don’t want to do music,” she told Out. “I basically decided years ago that I’m not a singer. I’m an actor. Which is cool, I’m happy being an actress.”
Of course, Cox has shown off her musical chops before. She starred as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the made-in-Toronto TV remake of The Rocky Horror Picture Show last year.
Cox said she wrote "Beat For The Gods" for fun. “I just wanted it to be a cute song for the kids to vogue to,” she explained.
Cox added the song is specifically targeted at the LGBTQ community. “I want it to be a celebration of queer culture and LGBTQ club culture.”
