Not many people can boast about singing “Tiny Dancer” while accompanied by Elton John on piano. On Sunday night, Taron Egerton became one of them.
“It’s funny how life turns out, isn’t it,” said the 29-year-old actor, who portrays the music icon in the forthcoming biopic Rocketman.
Egerton was at John’s annual Oscar night party in Los Angeles auctioning off a trip to the London premiere when he offered to perform the song (that came out 17 years before he was born). John volunteered to play piano.
Of course, John added his voice to Egerton’s near the end of the song.
Last year, John’s Canadian husband David Furnish, told The Hollywood Reporter that the singer was “really blown away” by Egerton’s recordings of his songs for the film.
“Elton has told Taron, ‘Don’t copy me. Don’t think you have to sing it exactly the way that I sang it. Don’t think you have to perform it the way I performed it’.
“I think it’s the challenge for the actor to embody the spirit and not get into thinking they have to do an impersonation.”
Brandon Flowers of The Killers also performed at the 27th annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party.
Rocketman opens in cinemas May 31.
