Off to Banff!

Well, the NEWSTALK Descente ski team is on the move once again..we've left the powder of Sun Peaks in BC to the powder in Alberta....Banff to be exact, skiing the Big3 and 30cm of new fresh champagne powder.   

The Banff area has incredible terrain, with over 8,000 acres of ski runs, 340 runs and plenty more..National Georgraphic named World's Best Ski of top 18 in the world to visit by CNN and many more well deserved comments.   

Not only can you ski but also take advantage and relax in the many hot springs, snow tubing, fat biking, dog sled tours and there's even a bowling alley in town.  Banff National Park is also home to two iconic hotels..Banff Springs and Chateau Lake Louise. 

We're staying right in town at the Elk and of the coolest hotels with a spa, hot tubs and plenty more all within a walk of downtown Banff...We're also taking a tour of Park Distillery, now in the rye batches. 

There's also a craft beer tour along with vodka in season.  The town of Banff has a number of restaurants to satisfy any taste and desire from Sushi to famous Alberta beef. 

Quaint shops line the downtown streets with every wish within a short walking distance.  We'll be skiing Lake Louise with a vertical of 3,250, 145 runs and longest at 8k. 

We'll see some of the highest peaks in the Rockies and the first stop on World FIS Tour. 

Sunshine Village will also be on the agenda with a vertical of 3,510 ft, 120 trails and over 500,000 visitors a year.  It's home to many TV series and movies including Amazing Race 5...boasts the only ski in/out lodge right on the mountain and enjoys the longest ski season of the 3. 

We will wind up our tour at Mt Norquay, basically right in town with night skiing and a vertical of 1,650ft...74 runs and 85% snow making to ensure great snow every time. I was in Banff last year and a must stop on your winter tour. 

OK, at home, plenty of new snow..tons of snow and everyone is open full operation machine groomed powder. 

As for events, everybody loves our four legged friends..head to Haliburton for the Highlands Dogsled Derby..teams from across North America all weekend at Pinestone Inn.   

Heading to Muskoka, it's the 1st annual Winter Deerhurst Inn...plenty of races for adults and the kids on Saturday from 11-4.   

The Dwight Winter Carnival runs all Saturday with horse drawn sleigh rides, family skate, pancake breakfast each morning along with a chilli cook off..There's an air show at Mt St Louis/Moonstone on Saturday..Sport Chek Air Nation tour with some of the best in Canada..slopestyle and half pipe events.

For snowmobilers, trails permitting it's the Dorset Poker Run on Saturday with proceeds to local Lions clubs..first prize is $2,000 with registration from 9-11. 

There's also a poker run in Haliburton at the Wild Life Reserve on Saturday from 8-5 with all proceeds to Firefighters in region. 

There's another hockey tournament..this time in Gravenhurst...12th annual with live entertainment, food and a pub crawl from the Wharf through the weekend. 

Whiskylicious is featured in Collingwood..10 day festival at 15 restaurants. 

Port Colborne has Sportsfest all weekend with hockey and volleyball tournaments, free skating and swimming plus plenty throughout town.   

11th annual Hillside Inside Festival is running in Guelph..11th year with live music and more right downtown. 

Hamilton continues to be busy with Winterfest...40th year through next weekend and in Toronto a number of festivities continue.

Romance of the Rails at Railroad Club of Toronto, Vaughan Winterfest at the Community Center with it's 29th year of family fun.

Winter at Ontario Place,  Winterlicous at over 200 restaurants in town, Light Festival at Distillery, Days of Wine and Chocolate at Niagara on the Lake and Roundhouse Winter Carnival on Saturday at Roundhouse park.
