Bianca Andreescu becomes 1st Canadian ever to win a grand slam title
19 year-old tennis phenom Bianca Andreescu is the U.S. open champion.
It's the first time a Canadian has won a singles grand slam title - one of the most prestigious accomplishments in professional tennis.
She battled her idol Serena Williams throughout the final match, never seeming to lose her cool.
It's been a whirlwind year for the 19 year-old Mississauga native, who ranked out of the top 200 last summer.
Recently she was ranked 15th, but is expected to jump to the top 5 when the new rankings come out Monday.
After she defeated Belinda Bencic in the semi-finals Thursday night, some American sports broadcasters really started to take notice.
(As of Thursday, September 5th), her rapid rise to the top echelons of women's tennis has seen her compile a 44 - 4 record since this time last year.
It was less than a month ago when Andreescu and Williams faced each other, briefly, at the Rogers Cup, before Williams withdrew from the match due to back spasms and Andreescu was declared the winner.
Many say today, Andreescu got to prove herself as a true champion.
