Campbells to close Etobicoke plant
The Campbell Soup Company is closing the doors on a plant in Etobicoke, and moving those jobs to the US.
The company announced to staff today, that they would be shutting down the plant that was built in 1931. They claimed the facility was took old, and couldn't be retro-fitted in a way that would make it viable.
The move impacts almost 400 jobs.
Campbell's says it plans to move that production to plants in North Carolina, Ohio and Texas, which means the facility on the waterfront in Etobicoke will be left to close in phases over the next 18 months.
The company says they will also be moving their Canadian headquarters and commercial operations, to a new location in the GTA.
In a statement from the company, a spokesperson says "the decision to stop producing soup and broth in Canada was a difficult one, and after a thorough review we decided this was the best course of action for our business".
It goes on to read, "we are operating in an increasingly challenging environment as our industry's consumer and retail landscapes continue to change dramatically."
