Drug lab waste is turning up ditches in Caledon

Provincial police say hazardous waste that appears to be from an illegal synthetic drug lab has been turning up in ditches in the Caledon, Ont., area, prompting officers to issue a public safety warning.

Police say they've received several reports of suspicious-looking waste dumped in ditches, sometimes in garbage bags or large plastic pails.

Sgt. Peter Leon says another suspicious disposal was discovered Monday, making it the fifth instance known to police in the last week.

Investigators who examined the material say it appears to come from an illegal synthetic drug lab.

Leon says it's difficult to identify the substances, which have been found in both solid and liquid forms, but police believe that they are the byproducts of drug production.

Police have warned that anyone who comes into contact with material with a strong chemical smell or any kind of residue should avoid approaching it and contact police immediately.
