Former governor general bills tax payers for $1.1 million

Normally when you leave a job you no longer get to bill your former employer for expenses.

That's not the case for former governors general and one in particular is raising some eyebrows.

The National Post reports that Adrienne Clarkson has billed tax payers for over $1.1 million in expenses since she left the office back in 2005.

They report that in nine of those years she expensed more than $100,000.

There's a program in place that allows former governors general to bill for office expenses for the rest of their lives but the paper says Clarkson is the only one to routinely bill that amount of money.

Rideau Hall won't provide specifics on how the money was spent. It only says it requires receipts.

The payouts are on top of the $1.6 million Clarkson has collected in pension money.
